George Schafer is a registered architect with BOUDREAUX, a multi-disciplinary design firm in the Carolinas, where he champions environmentally-responsive design strategies in master planning, local government and higher-education projects. Prior to joining BOUDREAUX full-time in May 2024, George served as Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Clemson until the Spring semester of 2023. He holds a Ph.D. in Planning, Design & the Built Environment from Clemson University (2015), a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (1996) and BA in Architecture from Clemson University. George was professor-in-residence at the Daniel Center for Building Research and Urban Studies located in Genoa, Italy for the 2015-2016 academic year and again for the 2023 spring semester, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the program.

George began lecturing at Clemson University in 2011 and his courses included Design Studio, User-Centered Design of Interactive Artifacts and Environments, Architectural Portfolio, and Introduction to Urban Contexts. He also taught Design Studio in Genoa at the fluid campus. Prior to his decade in academia, George worked for The Preston Partnership, SchenkelShultz Architects, Burgess Design Studio, and Middleton McMillan Architects where he designed elementary schools, performing arts centers, and local government buildings.

George’s research focus is in cyber-physical systems, the user experience, and technology-enhanced literary texts and tools. His ongoing research explores the intersection between the domains of architecture, human-computer and robot interaction, library/information science and education through the design and evaluation of full-scale cyber-physical prototypes for children’s literacy attainment.
